Your baby may or may not be able to tell you about the poop, but everyone in your house, society, city, country will know when your baby starts screaming (not crying) due to diaper rash! Diaper rash are no fun at all – neither for baby nor for you. You need to learn how to prevent those nasty rashes on baby’s soft, sensitive skin and heal them (because they will happen!!). Today, we will answer some of the frequently asked questions (FAQs) related to rashes around diaper or nappy area, popularly known as Diaper Rashes:

What causes diaper rashes?

Diaper rash are the red patches on your baby’s skin around bottoms, the area usually covered by diapers. Rashes happen due to any of the following reasons:
  • Wetness: All diapers, including the super-absorbent ones, require regular changing. Rashes are caused when baby’s skin gets exposed to urine or stool for long durations, leading to formation of certain chemicals that are quite harsh on baby’s skin. Babies with diarrhoea or frequent bowel movement are more prone to diaper rashes.
  • Tight Diapers: It is important to keep track of baby’s physical growth and diaper size being used. There is a strong possibility that you might be using tight diaper, which is causing friction with the baby’s skin, resulting in rashes.
  • Bacterial /Yeast Infection: Bacteria and Yeast are most likely to grow in warm and moist areas such as skin around bottoms. Growth in bacteria or yeast can cause infection leading to rashes.
  • Food Changes: Babies usually suffer from constipation when they switch from liquid to semi-solid or solid food. These changes often affect digestion system leading to more frequent bowel movement. It is recommended to introduce one food at a time to check baby’s adaption to new diet.
  • Chemicals: Diaper Rash may also occur if your baby is sensitive to certain chemicals like fragrance in personal care products or detergent used for cleaning cloth diapers.

How can I treat Diaper Rashes?

If diaper rash develops, it is important to take following steps to heal rashes quickly:
  • Leave the diaper area open and try to avoid diapers as much as possible for a few days. This increases the air flow to the affected area and aids in quick healing.
  • Change diapers frequently and keep baby’s body covered by diaper clean and dry.
  • Avoid using wipes that contain alcohol or fragrance, as it may cause irritation to baby. You need to wash and gently dry his diaper area every time you change diaper.
  • Avoid rubbing.
  • Use a loose diaper if you find the diaper is now tight for the baby
  • Consider moving to a different brand of disposable diapers if the problem is persistent.
  • Lastly but most importantly, use a high-quality diaper rash cream / balm to protect your baby’s skin from rashes.. Apply a thick coating of a proven diaper cream that forms a barrier heals baby’s skin.

What is the role of Zinc Oxide in a Diaper Cream?

Zinc Oxide (known as Yashad Bhasm in Ayurveda) is a naturally occurring mineral that stimulates wound healing as it provides zinc needed for skin cell repair, decreases inflammation and bacterial growth and works as skin astringent. It is a common use ingredient in topical (for skin) creams for diaper rashes, minor skin burns and other skin irritations. A proven safe and highly effective natural material.

Is Diaper Cream safe to use on a baby?

Diaper Creams that are made using Zinc Oxide, natural vegetable oils and herbal extract are totally safe to use. It is still advisable to do a patch test on baby’s elbow to check for any sensitivity. However, not all diaper creams are good for baby’s sensitive skin. You should always study ingredients properly to ensure that you are choosing a safe and effective product for your baby.

Can I use diaper cream with cloth diapers?

No, Diaper creams are rich in Zinc Oxide and heavy oils that hamper the absorbing capabilities of cloth diapers. It is best to use disposable diapers, as heavy oils are difficult to wash off from cloth diapers. Life & Pursuits Organic Diaper Rash Cream is a therapeutic blend of extra-virgin, cold-pressed, pure natural oils, medicinal Ayurveda herbs and Zinc Oxide.
